The real choice: one-device production or camera-first production

The Robot Phone collapses several roles into one object. It is a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Android phone, a communication device, an editor, an uploader and a camera whose main module can move independently. If your current process ends with transferring footage to a phone before posting, removing that transfer is a meaningful convenience. It is still an inference about workflow, not proof that any particular edit or export will finish faster. Luna Ultra is built around the recording task. Its official specifications list a 233g black model or 235g white model, a 2-inch OLED display, 47GB of internal storage, USB-C 3.0 and four microphones. None of those items is remarkable in isolation. Together they let the camera remain a camera while the creator’s phone stays available for notes, communication, monitoring or publishing. [4]

Tom’s Guide compared final hardware directly and chose Luna Ultra overall. Its reviewer found the dedicated camera slightly faster to launch and more comfortable for longer recording. Those are limited, attributed observations, not our measurements, but they match the basic ergonomic difference: Luna is a narrow camera grip, while Robot Phone asks you to hold and manage a flagship phone as the camera body. For a ten-second clip, that advantage may barely matter. Across repeated takes, walk-and-talk sequences or an event, startup friction and grip comfort compound.

The phone still has a practical counterargument: it eliminates a second device. For a creator who records briefly, edits immediately and publishes from the same location, the total process may be simpler even if the recording grip is less specialized.

Stabilization and tracking are closer than the form factors suggest

HONOR describes a four-degree-of-freedom titanium mechanism with 3-axis motorized stabilization. The company claims ±0.005mm mechanism precision, a 2.6g motor and control speed up to 360 degrees per second. Insta360 lists a 3-axis gimbal, maximum control speed of 210 degrees per second and ±0.005-degree jitter suppression. The direct comparison is more informative. Tom’s Guide reported that Robot Phone generally kept pace with Luna Ultra during ordinary subject tracking. Luna held a small advantage when the subject moved faster or approached the edge of the frame. The publication also found both products already very stable before deciding whether Robot Phone’s extra Super Steady mode was necessary. That supports a narrow conclusion: the phone can be credible for solo tracking, but the dedicated camera retained an edge in the harder moments tested. [5]

This is not a universal stabilization ranking. Subject, pace, lens, capture mode and electronic cropping can change the result, and the session did not test long-term motor consistency.

Lenses and zoom: flexibility versus direct control

Robot Phone offers more distinct rear-camera perspectives on paper. Its moving main camera is a 200MP 1/1.28-inch f/1.6 unit with OIS. A separate 200MP 1/1.4-inch f/2.6 periscope provides 2.7x optical zoom and OIS, while a 50MP f/2.0 camera covers a 122-degree ultrawide view. Luna Ultra documents a 1-inch f/1.8 main sensor at 20mm equivalent and a 1/1.3-inch f/2.0 second sensor at 60mm equivalent. Insta360 lists a 1x–12x zoom range, but the official specification does not justify calling that entire range optical. Tom’s Guide identified dedicated zoom hardware as a practical Luna advantage. By contrast, Robot Phone’s moving main camera can crop its high resolution but has no dedicated optical zoom mechanism of its own; its 2.7x optical view comes from the separate fixed periscope. Vertical video has a shared compromise

Tom’s Guide reported that both products use horizontally oriented sensors and crop for vertical capture. In the modes it compared, the publication described the vertical result as roughly 2.8K rather than native 4K. That matters to Reels, Shorts and TikTok creators who assume a rotating or moving camera always preserves the full sensor readout. [5]

That does not make either unsuitable for vertical publishing. Verify the exact resolution, frame rate and stabilization mode you plan to deliver.

Audio, storage and power change the production day

Luna Ultra’s four microphones, internal 47GB and USB-C 3.0 connection create a clear camera-file workflow. Those specifications do not prove better sound or faster real transfers, but they give a creator separate capture storage and dedicated audio hardware. Insta360 also warns that Luna Ultra is not dustproof, waterproof or splashproof, so a travel kit still needs environmental protection. [4]

Robot Phone instead shares storage, power and attention with normal phone use. Insta360 claims up to 240 minutes for Luna Ultra at 1080p/24 in a 25°C laboratory with the screen and Wi-Fi off. HONOR’s collaboration with ARRI adds more substance than a camera-brand badge. The documented capture path includes ARRI LogC3, 10-bit Log, 4:2:2 sampling and ARRI Wide Gamut 3, along with 11 ARRI Looks. HONOR also lists false color, focus peaking and 2.39:1 framing tools. [3]

Availability and support can overrule the camera decision
