A stock clock that ignores your home-screen grid wastes a cell or covers an icon you still tap. Build one KWGT text clock, drag the empty widget to its final cell size before you load a preset, and replace the default touch action.

The steps below come from Kustom’s public documentation, re-read on October 13, 2026. Launcher menu names still vary by phone. No handset was used to confirm those labels.

Use KWGT when a stock Android clock will not sit in the cells you have. Add an empty KWGT widget, long-press it, and drag the borders to the final size before you load a preset. The KWGT FAQ, modified November 29, 2022, says Auto sizing follows the size the launcher reports, and that report is only as good as the launcher. Show the time with one text module and the formula $df(h:mm)$. Kustom’s date-format page, modified July 13, 2026, labels that example “Hours and minutes with padding zero.” On the Touch tab, remove or disable the action that opens the editor. Leave a one-second refresh out of this clock. The FAQ says the widget does not update while the screen is off, and a January 2023 troubleshooting page treats Fast update mode as a battery tradeoff.

Piece What you set What you check
Empty KWGT widget Add it from the launcher, then stop No preset is loaded yet
Cell size Long-press and drag the borders to the final grid size Widget sizing in KWGT is off Auto if the box keeps changing 1
Clock text One text module, formula $df(h:mm)$ The date-format example is “Hours and minutes with padding zero” 9
Touch Touch tab: remove or disable the action that opens the editor 5 A tap does the one thing you chose, or nothing
Minute update Background running, Fast mode left off The minute can move while the screen is on. It stays put while the screen is off 1

Wider home-screen setup, including notes and automation, is in the Android productivity and essential apps guide. This page stops at one clock.

Kustom’s download index, modified July 30, 2026, listed stable KWGT 3.82, uploaded the same day. 12 Install KWGT Kustom Widget Maker from the store you already use. This plan does not split free and paid features. The current Play listing was not available in the saved research copy.

What goes into the minimal clock plan?

Four objects are enough: the empty widget, one text formula, a size you set first, and one touch decision. Skip preset packs, weather, and a second hand.

  1. From the launcher’s widget list, add a KWGT widget. Leave it empty.
  2. Long-press that widget and drag the borders until the box matches the cells you want. Kustom’s instruction is to resize before you load anything. 1
  3. Open the editor only after that box is final. Add a text module and set its text to $df(h:mm)$. The date-format page labels that example “Hours and minutes with padding zero.” If you want a marker in 12-hour time, the same page’s example $df(hh:mma)$ is “Hours with leading zero, minutes and AM/PM marker (if 12h format in use).” The page says the marker is hidden when 24-hour time is in use. The token table on that page also defines hh as the padded hour and mm as the zero-padded minute. $df(hh:mm)$ is those two tokens together. It is not its own example row. 9
  4. Open the Touch tab. Many widgets open the editor on touch because that is the default action on the whole widget. Remove that action, or set it to disabled. 5 On the root item, the Shortcuts tab lists touch events from the root and from inner modules. Use it to see what a tap still fires.
  5. Save the preset. If the drawing looks small inside the box you already sized, use scale in the layer tab. Do that after the borders are final, not instead of step 2. 1

The button that inserts a text module is not named on the date-format page. The image-on-click recipe calls the object you add a module. 11 If your editor uses another word, pick the item whose text field accepts a formula. That label was not rechecked on version 3.82.

A flow is a separate tool. From Kustom 3.70, layers have a Flows tab for a trigger plus one or more actions, such as a manual trigger that starts when you touch. 10 The image recipe then adds a Touch-tab action of type “trigger flow”. 11 This clock does not need that chain. One Touch-tab decision is the whole tap plan.

Common mistake: Loading a preset, then dragging the borders. Kustom says to drag first and load second. Scale in the layer tab is the follow-up when the drawing still does not match the box. 2

Takeaway: Finish the empty box, then add $df(h:mm)$ and one touch decision.

How do you size the widget before the launcher changes it?

Set the box on the home screen first. KWGT’s scale control only changes the drawing inside that box.

Kustom’s resize page, modified December 2, 2022, repeats the FAQ and adds two checks. Turn widget sizing away from Auto in KWGT’s app settings. Auto means KWGT takes the size from the launcher, and a weak report from the launcher makes the widget resize on its own. Also read the rotation line in settings. It should look like “Default (Landscape)” when that is the orientation you are in. If the line is wrong, force the right one. The same page says the jump often shows up after a restart, and on phones with more than one screen size, including foldables. 2

For those foldables, the page says you can read the screen with $si(swidth)$ or $si(sheight)$ and let the widget respond. That is a second preset, not part of this one-clock build. Build the single size you actually keep the phone in. Add the screen-size formulas only if that one size jumps when you fold or unfold.

Edge-to-edge width is a launcher limit. The FAQ says Android adds padding, so a widget cannot fill the screen width on the standard launcher. On Nova, remove widget padding in Nova’s settings, long-press the widget, and choose padding from the popup. 1 If you are not on Nova, keep the cell size you dragged and leave the padding alone.

Takeaway: Drag the empty widget to the cells you will keep, then load the clock. Use scale only if the text still sits small inside that box.

Why can the minute or the tap differ by launcher?

The launcher owns the widget’s box and the path a tap takes. KWGT then has its own rules for how often the minute moves, and some phone makers block the background service or the tap.

The FAQ says Android widgets do not know whether you are looking at them. They can keep running while another app is in front, and KWGT still does not update when the screen is off. From a technical point of view the app could refresh every second, and the FAQ says that behavior was turned off to avoid battery and performance trouble with complex presets. The FAQ also says this could change if Android or launchers add better support. 1 The persistent-notification page, modified November 26, 2022, says a Kustom clock needs an update every minute while the screen is on. 6

Those two pages are both from late 2022. A later page, modified January 17, 2023, says you can force more frequent updates: KWGT app settings, Advanced options, Update mode set to Fast. It says KWGT can technically refresh every second, and that the widget will keep trying to render while you use another app, because a widget cannot tell that it is off screen. 3 This clock plan leaves Fast off. The 2022 FAQ and the 2023 page do not describe the same default. They were not compared on a phone running the 3.82 build from July 30, 2026. If you turn Fast on, you are taking the drawback the 2023 page describes.

When the minute freezes, the 2023 page says to let KWGT run in the background first. Battery optimization, Greenify, Purify, and Samsung Smart Manager are the blockers it names. 3

The notification and the battery exemption are a pair. You do one of them. Kustom’s preferred option is to remove Kustom from battery optimization. The other option is to turn the notification off: long-press it, open the info icon, then switch notifications off, or use Android settings, Applications, the Kustom app, Notifications. 6 Turning the notification off while the app stays battery-optimized removes the thing that page says keeps the service alive. For a clock that should move each minute with the screen on, take the exemption.

The whitelist page, modified November 25, 2022, says the settings path varies by device. Its common path for Android 6.0 and newer is Settings, Apps, the cog at the top right, Battery Optimization, All Apps, Kustom, Do Not Optimize. For MIUI it says Settings, Additional Settings, Battery & Performance, then set Manage Apps Battery Usage to off. For Samsung it points at the Smart Manager app, the battery area, App Optimization, Detail, then disable optimization for Kustom. 7 Those labels are from 2022. Read them on your phone before you hunt for the same words. The page sends other vendors to dontkillmyapp.com. 7

A tap fails for a different reason than a frozen minute. The disable-touch page says the usual case is simpler: the widget still has the default action, so a tap opens the editor. Clear that on the Touch tab. 5

If a tap still does nothing, or an app still will not open, Kustom’s touch page, modified November 27, 2022, names Xiaomi and OnePlus in particular. The shared steps on that page are: remove both Kustom and the launcher from battery optimization, then in Kustom settings set Notification Mode at the top to FORCED. An optional step grants Kustom notification access under Android settings, Apps & Notifications, Special App Access, Notifications. 4 The same page then gives extra permission paths and writes them for KLWP, including a Xiaomi “home screen shortcuts” toggle and a POCO pop-up-window toggle. Those lines name KLWP. This clock plan does not copy them onto KWGT.

Some launchers also cap how many KWGT widgets you can place. A page modified January 8, 2023, says some devices from China, Oppo among them, limit similar widgets. On some of those phones the limit is one widget. On others it is five. Kustom says it cannot remove that cap. The workaround it names is another launcher, Smart Launcher or Nova Launcher. 8 For this plan, place the one clock. Switching launchers is a separate choice.

What you see What Kustom’s pages say What to do for this clock
The box changes size after a restart Auto sizing follows the launcher. Resize before load, then use scale in the layer tab. 2 Turn sizing off Auto. Drag the empty widget, then load the preset.
You want the clock to touch the screen edge The standard launcher keeps padding. Nova can remove widget padding, then a long-press offers padding. 1 Keep the dragged cell size unless you are on Nova and follow that note.
The minute stays still with the screen on Battery optimization or a cleaner app can block the service. Fast mode exists and keeps rendering in other apps. 3 Exempt KWGT from battery optimization. Leave Fast off unless the minute is still stuck.
The minute stays still with the screen off The FAQ says KWGT does not update when the screen is off. 1 Expect the clock to catch up when the screen is on.
A tap opens the editor That action is the default on many widgets. 5 Remove it or set it to disabled on the Touch tab.
A tap does nothing on Xiaomi or OnePlus The 2022 touch page names those makers and the shared battery and FORCED notification steps. 4 Do those shared steps. Leave the KLWP-only lines on that page alone.
The launcher refuses another KWGT widget Oppo and some other devices from China cap similar widgets at one or at five. 8 Keep this single clock, or use a launcher Kustom names.

Takeaway: Fix a frozen minute by letting KWGT run in the background. Fix a bad tap on the Touch tab before you blame the launcher.

How do you save the preset and load it on another phone?

Copy the file whole. Kustom treats .kwgt and .kwgt.zip as the same package, and it tells you not to unzip it.

In the app, press Load Preset, then the folder button on the top menu, then Import. To move the file yourself, copy it unchanged into Kustom/widgets/ on the SD card. The folder should already exist. After that, Load Preset shows it in the sd card section. If it does not appear, the FAQ says to check that the zip is intact and that the extension is still .kwgt or .kwgt.zip. 1

Scroll horizontally to view all table columns.

Check Do this Stop if
Extension Keep .kwgt or .kwgt.zip The name was changed to a plain .zip you already opened
Inside KWGT Load Preset, folder button, Import The preset never appears in the list
By hand Copy the file as it is into Kustom/widgets/ You decompressed it first
After the copy Load Preset and open the sd card section The FAQ’s corrupt-zip case matches what you see

That checklist is for a file you already have. It is not a tour of preset packs.

When this clock plan does not apply

Use KWGT for a small clock that can sit on top of another live wallpaper. The FAQ says KLWP, the live wallpaper, is the fit when you want to theme the whole screen: faster updates, animation, and independence from the launcher. It also says KWGT can run on launchers that do not support live wallpapers, and it names Buzz as an example. You can run KWGT and KLWP together. 1 A full-screen wallpaper theme is outside this plan.

The system lock screen is outside it as well. The FAQ mentions lock screen apps as one place KWGT might be used. It does not give a procedure for the phone’s own lock screen. A file-format page that mentions a lock screen was not used here.

iOS is outside it. The FAQ says Kustom uses features available from Android 4.4 and cannot be ported lower. 1 That floor is old. It still means this app is an Android widget maker, and this page has no iOS steps.

A seconds hand is outside it. The 2022 FAQ says every-second refresh was disabled. The 2023 page documents Fast mode and its battery drawback. Neither page promises a smooth second hand on the 3.82 build.

Free and paid entitlements are outside it. Confirm those on the store page you install from.

Method and sources

Compiled from Kustom HQ pages, with AI assistance. The KWGT FAQ shows a modified time of November 29, 2022, and the resize sentence was still on that URL on October 13, 2026. The date-format page shows July 13, 2026. The download index shows July 30, 2026, and lists stable build 3.82 uploaded that day. The resize, touch, notification, and battery pages show modified times in November and December 2022. The update-delay page shows January 17, 2023. The widget-count page shows January 8, 2023. The flows overview shows February 14, 2023. All of those URLs were read on October 13, 2026.

The minimal clock plan, the resize-before-load order, and the import checklist are procedures taken from those pages. They are not a recording of taps on a phone. Launcher labels, battery menus, and whether Fast mode still matches the January 2023 description should be rechecked on the phone and in the current Kustom pages before you depend on a label. No price, certification, or measured battery figure is claimed.
