Moving subscriptions without recording your place can leave you searching through episodes you already heard. Choose Pocket Casts for account-based continuity, or AntennaPod for an Android player with local exports and optional server-based sync; use OPML to move the show list between them.

For someone searching for the best podcast app for Android, the useful decision here is between these two workflows. Pocket Casts documents account sync for listening position and episode status. AntennaPod offers more responsibility over your own backup and synchronization setup. Neither choice makes an OPML import a complete restore. 2 5 6

This is a documentation-based comparison checked October 16, 2026. We have not benchmarked sound quality, silence detection, battery use, or sync reliability. See our review policy for the distinction between research and device testing.

Playback controls: compare the episode you actually listen to

Speed adjustment and silence removal solve different problems. A faster speed changes the pace throughout a recording; a silence control targets pauses. Decide which you want before comparing the menus.

Control or listening mode Pocket Casts on Android AntennaPod evidence
Playback speed Adjustable 1 About page documents faster/slower playback 7
Silence removal Trim Silence, with Mild, Medium, and Mad Max levels 1 Current development code includes a skip-silence checkbox 8
Volume boost Documented Android control 1 Unknown for your installed build and device; verify in the player
Streaming HLS video Trim Silence unavailable; speed and Volume Boost still work on Android 1 HLS-specific behavior not established by the sources used here

In Pocket Casts, expand the player and open Playback Effects. Choose the global setting or the setting for the current podcast. Its documentation says regular episodes and downloaded copies restore the usual effects after the HLS streaming exception. Web and desktop playback have different effect support, so do not infer identical controls from a shared account. 1

AntennaPod’s inspected source file places skip-silence controls in its speed dialog. That development code confirms the feature’s existence, rather than the exact menu or behavior of every released build. Check the installed app before depending on it. 8

For your own comparison, use a familiar spoken section and a section containing intentional pauses or music. Change one control at a time and decide whether the result remains comfortable. This is a suggested listening check, not a result we measured. A menu with more options does not by itself prove better audio.

Sync: who keeps your listening position?

Pocket Casts is the simpler starting point if you want its account to connect your listening devices. Its sync documentation includes followed shows, playback position, played/starred/archived states, and Up Next. It excludes Playback Effects, Auto Downloads, and notification settings. A restored show list therefore does not mean the new phone has your old playback preferences. 2

Before retiring a phone, pause a familiar episode, let the signed-in app sync, and open it on the other device. Check the position and a known played episode, then inspect playback and download settings separately. Treat an observed mismatch as a reason to keep the old installation available.

AntennaPod gives you a provider choice and the setup work that goes with it. Its documentation describes gpodder.net and self-hosted alternatives, including Nextcloud with gPodder Sync. The public gpodder.net service is described as frequently overloaded; that is the project’s warning, not a reliability measurement from us. 6

The synchronization guide also flags an initial-upload detail: when you create the device during AntennaPod setup rather than beforehand on the server, Force sync uploads previously played states. Check that instruction if older progress is absent. AntennaPod’s backup guide says sync omits favorites, queue, and app settings. 6 5

Choose AntennaPod if that control is useful to you; choose Pocket Casts if you prefer to manage the app account instead of a separate sync provider. Neither arrangement proves that an unrelated podcast client will understand the same history.

OPML, database export, and sync carry different data

OPML moves subscriptions, not listening progress.

Scroll horizontally to view all table columns.

Method What it carries Boundary that changes your plan
OPML between podcast apps Subscription list No played state, episode-specific data, or app settings 5
AntennaPod database export AntennaPod data for an AntennaPod restore Same app version on both devices; media must be downloaded again 5
Pocket Casts account sync Supported account data within Pocket Casts Playback effects and download rules need separate attention 2
AntennaPod provider sync Supported podcast/episode data through the provider Does not replace its full database export 5 6

AntennaPod’s documented OPML import lets you select shows and adds them without removing existing subscriptions. Save exports outside its app directory so uninstalling the app does not remove the file. 5

Keep both an OPML file for portability and an appropriate recovery route for the app you are leaving. For AntennaPod, the database export serves a different purpose from the portable show list. Keep a readable personal note of the unfinished episodes that would be painful to find again.

Move subscriptions in either direction

The following procedure combines the documented import/export routes with our suggested checks. It does not assume that importing a file has transferred everything you need.

  1. Record the starting point. Note the important show names, unfinished episode titles, and current positions. Keep the original app installed. Review automatic-download settings in the destination before adding a large list.
  2. Export from the app you are leaving. In Pocket Casts, use Profile → Settings → Import & Export OPML, then Save file or Send email. In AntennaPod, use Settings → Import/Export → OPML export. Keep a copy you can find independently. 4 5
  3. Import into the destination. Pocket Casts on Android uses Profile → Settings → Import & Export OPML → Select file. AntennaPod’s Add Podcast flow offers OPML import. 3 9
  4. Compare the show list. Check a frequently updated show, an older show, and any private subscription you depend on. If one is absent or does not load, keep its original details and resolve it before removing the old app.
  5. Rebuild the listening setup deliberately. Find your unfinished episodes from the note, inspect the playback controls, and select downloads for the next trip. Enable sync only after choosing the account or provider you intend to use.

If a required show is missing, stop at that checkpoint. Reopen the old app, check the exported list and the feed details, and retain both copies until you can play the required content in the destination. Avoid turning a partial migration into a reset of the only working installation.

Before deleting the old app

Use this short acceptance checklist on your own phone:

  • The OPML file opens from the folder where you saved it.
  • Important shows appear in the destination and a recent episode plays.
  • You can find the unfinished episode and resume at the position you recorded.
  • A chosen downloaded episode plays with the phone offline.
  • Playback effects and automatic downloads match what you want on this device.
  • If you enabled sync, a second device shows the expected position after your check.
  • You still have the original installation or an independently checked recovery copy.

For an Android-only player without app advertising, AntennaPod is a strong candidate; its project distinguishes ads inside publisher audio from ads in the application. For continuity through a Pocket Casts account, start with Pocket Casts and check the settings its sync excludes. 10 2
